Introduction
With more than half its territory covered by water (even under normal weather conditions), Tabasco is Mexico’s greenest state. It claims some of the most beautiful unspoiled landscapes in Mexico, with wetlands, and fertile river plains and jungles.
The oil industry spurred the growth of the state capital, Villahermosa, into a bustling tropical metropolis. The city was founded in 1596 on the banks of the Grijalva River, and a broad boulevard follows the western bank. Sightseeing tours are offered by the Capitan Beulo II riverboat. You can also dine onboard; its wharf snack bar is a popular gathering place. For information, call (993) 314 4644.
