Introduction
Better known for its high-tech convention center, Cintermex, than for its mountaintop retreat, Chipinque, the city of Monterrey is often overlooked as a tourist destination. But there’s another side to this modern fast-paced metropolis that warrants packing some jeans and suntan lotion, toting a camera, and inviting the family along.
Nestled at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountains, in a 1,800-foot-high valley, the city is dominated by a uniquely shaped 5,700-foot peak called Cerro de la Silla, or Saddle Hill. Temperatures above 80°F are common from April through October. During the winter, nights can get very crisp and chilly, and a thick sweater or jacket is necessary. It generally rains in August and September.
This thriving metropolis is the country’s third-largest city, with about 4 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan area, which includes nine municipalities. The one called San Pedro Garza Garcia is home to the most affluent residential and commercial district.
