Introduction
San Luis Potosi is a state of contrasts, its geography encompassing diverse ecosystems, from semi-desert chaparral to humid tropical forest, from the arid landscapes of Real de Catorce to the exuberant vegetation of Xilitla, its two most important sites of interest.
The state is also home to the scenic Huasteca Potosina, where white-water rafting along the blue Santa Maria River is especially popular. During the 16th century San Luis Potosi was the third-largest province in New Spain, its boundaries extending from Louisiana to New Mexico. Many of its towns preserve their colonial character, including the state capital, also called San Luis Potosi.
