Introduction
Farther south along the coast from Huatulco is the more bohemian resort of Puerto Escondido, an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sunny days and starry nights, unless you have come to test its fame as Mexico’s surfing capital (an international tournament takes place each November).
The town’s centerpiece is a short, wide thoroughfare (Perez Gazga Street) that has been closed to traffic and turned into a promenade lined with restaurants, souvenir shops and sporting goods stores.
In recent years, the area around Puerto Escondido’s surfing beach, Zicatela, has evolved into a miniature resort in its own right, with a hotel strip, colorful boutiques, sidewalk cafés and restaurants.
