We stayed at the Gran Melia in Cancun in the royal pyramid building. This was our second stay at that hotel. We had a wonderful New Year’s eve there, they had a great buffet and dancing, it was one of the best.
The hotel is most likely the prettiest of all on the hotel strand. We have visited the JW Marriott, the Ritz Carlton, the Meridian and of course the Marriott Casa Magna next door. We also went to see the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral and still liked ours the best. The employees are very nice and helpful.
I do think the food though needs some work. Unfortunately we did not really have too much food that we liked. I have also read reviews on the Paradisus in the Riviera Maya and that there were quite a few people who were not happy with the various food in the restaurants. The buffets are probably the best. It is very important for the food to be good. The New Year’s eve buffett was fabulous, great choices and great taste. I am not sure why the restaurants can't seem to get it right. The sushi restaurant served sushi at almost room temperature. That can be a health hazard.
I hate to complain because I know everyone there really tries to please the guests. We love Mexico and most likely will go the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen area next time. After reviewing many of the all inclusives in that area and upon a personal friends recommendation we will probably try the Iberostar Gran Paraiso next time. We went to Akumal many many years ago, well before all the building. We want to see it again. Again, we would like to purchase the 2008 issue, so let me have the info for purchasing when you have it and lets hope this hurricane season bypasses the Yucatan again this year — no more Wilmas!
